Chapter 17

Later that day after breakfast I went to find Sarah. When I found her I grabbed her.
"Sarah! Where's the guitar you brought?!" I asked loudly.
"It's next to my bed. Why.."
"Thanks!" I yelled and went away before she could finish.
I grabbed her guitar and sat on my bed. I started playing the song with no words. I stopped to think. I couldn't think of any good words. I put the guitar next to me and laid down. I closed my eyes. After a few minutes, my eyes shot open and I flew up off the bed and grabbed a pencil and a notebook. I quickly started writing. I got my creativity back that quickly. But I thought, will I finish soon enough? And will I have the guts to sing it to Nick? I won't know until I try.
When I finished I smiled as I looked at my work. I decided to quietly play it and sing it. I smiled when I finished playing it. I was satisfied. But... the song didn't exactly fit the situation. I sighed. Perhaps I must wait to sing it to him.

Just then, Sarah walked in.
"Hey, Keila! So did you know that Nick keeps a journal under his bed?"
"He does?!" My eyes lit up.
"Yeah, he.." I ran (sorta) to the cabin next door. Nobody was in there, thankfully. I quickly searched under Nick's bed and found a black book. I opened it and on the first page it said:

Nick's Journal
Private!

Yes! I found it! I quickly put the small book in my pocket and went out of Cabin 6 and into Cabin 5. I opened it to the first day of camp and read.

Monday, July 14
, 2008

Today is the first day of camp. I am so far having a good time. I met this girl; Keila. She is one of the most beautiful girls I have ever met. Today she cut her finger very deep. I took her to the nurse and stayed with her when she got stitches. Later that day we talked at the lake. Unfortunately, she puked on me and ran. I didn't mind, though. She is very nice, and actually didn't freak out when she saw me. Not really. Anyway, I really want to get to know her better. She's so different. When I see her, I feel good inside. I don't know what it is, but I think I like it.

~Nick Jonas

I smiled and skipped to the last entry. This morning!

Journal, this morning Keila told me she didn't like me more than as a friend, despite what happened. My heart is drowned in tears, Journal. I don't know what I'll do. I was going to sing her a special song I wrote just recently just for her. Now I guess I won't. I heard her play guitar, though. She's really good. Another reason to like her the way I do. I wonder if she can sing? I guess it doesn't matter, though. Now I'm wondering if I should avoid her or act like nothing's happened. My cabin buddy, Rick, says to avoid her, but my other cabin buddy, Sean, says to act as if nothing happened. I don't know what to do. I guess I'll wait and see.

~Nick Jonas

I smiled on and off. He really does like me. And I have the nerve to tell him I'm having doubts?! I went to the door of Cabin 6 and through the book on Nick's bed. I walked to the big building next to the cafeteria. People were playing games of all kinds, eating snacks, talking, even playing instruments. I saw Nick playing a depressing tune on his guitar. My heart sank as I saw him so glum, and yet I smiled seeing him at all. I went up to him.

"Hey, Nick."
He looked up at me, then back down and continued to play.
"Nick? Hello?" He didn't stop.
"Nick!" He was still playing. I finally got mad and grabbed the guitar from him. He looked at me surprised.
"Um, you must not have heard me. I said hey, Nick."
"Can I have my guitar back?"
"No!" I said as if I were insulted.
"What?"
"You can't have it back."
"Why n-" I covered his mouth with my hand.
"I don't want you to avoid me."
"What? Who said I was..."
"Nick, you're avoiding me."
"Keila.." I interrupted him
"I wanted to tell you that I wrote the words to my song."
"Okay. Can I hear them?"
"No."
"Wha-"
"Not until you stop avoiding me like stupid Rick said, and start acting as if nothing happened like Sean said."
"How did you know tha-"
"No time for stupid questions! Now take your guitar. I'll be somewhere else." I walked away after I gave him his guitar. Now I could only hope he would do as Sean suggested.

Chapter 16

I woke up early that morning. Sarah and Gabi were still in bed sleeping. I quietly got up and changed (with difficulty) into a new pair of shorts and a new shirt. The cast I had on wasn't that big. It started at my foot and ended just below my knee. It wasn't immensely thick, either. I slipped on a flip flop, grabbed my crutch and wobbled out of the cabin. I went to the waterfall place. I didn't really want anyone to find me, so I went to the far end. I got to the beginning of the entrance type thing and heard music. I went about half way through when I saw a figure by the waterfall, strumming a guitar. The figure had curly hair.

"Nick?" I said quietly to myself. He couldn't see me, because he was facing the other way. I got closer, trying to be as quiet as possible. I didn't recognize the tune. I decided to get closer and then hide in the forest and listen. He started to sing:

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down the words:
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen
[end]

For some reason, my heart was a flutter, and I smiled. Could he have written that song for me? I couldn't help but wonder. Suddenly, I heard a weird noise, like a quack and a roar mixed. A... Quoarck. I saw Nick jump up in surprise, and yell, "Woah!" He looked around strangely and started walking back to the camp grounds. But I noticed he left his guitar. So after he was gone I got out from hiding and went over to where his guitar was and picked it up.

"Okay... let's see if I remember..." I said to myself and started playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I smiled and laughed a little. Then I remembered something.

FLASHBACK
[3rd person point of view]

A church sanctuary had its pews filled with people. The crowd was hushed as the lights dimmed and a spotlight shone on a twelve year old girl. Keila Thomas sat on a stool holding her accoustic guitar. She was very nervous as she looked at the crowd staring at her and waiting. She swallowed hard and adjusted the microphone. She took a deep breath then started playing the tune to a song she wrote herself. She started to sing a verse.

Everyone Knows
that I'm ten feet under
Till you come along
and brighten my day
Everyone knows
that you kill the thunder
The roaring in my brain
You've given me the strength
To see right through the haze

When she messed up on a cord, she stopped and cleared her throat. She continued her song.

Shine
Come on and let it shine
Light me up,
Make me feel alright
You've got what it takes,
Shine on me today

Shine
And only you know how,
To lift my spirit off the ground
And chase those clouds away
Shine on me today

She stopped and the crowd roared with claps. Keila, the extremely shy girl, couldn't help but smile. She didn't want to embarrass herself or puke, so she quickly left the stage.

END OF FLASHBACK

I smiled at the sudden memory. I started playing my song. I hadn't played it for a long time so I messed up a lot on the notes and cords. I started singing my song. When I finished, I smiled and played it again, but this time I did it almost as perfect as the night I preformed. I only did the first verse and the chorus, because that's all I could remember. I tried hard to remember, but I was completely blank. It was as if the mini Keila's in my brain that filed and stored all my memories had shredded the rest of my song, and didn't have any extra copies. I sighed and started to just strum the guitar strings. I didn't notice after a while that I had been playing a song that I had written when I was eleven and bored. It was meant to be a sad song, and it had no words. I promised myself that when I was fifteen I would add words. I remembered as I was playing the song that I only had until March next year to add words to the song. I started thinking as I played. But my mind was blank in that area. I kept playing, though. Then I heard footsteps, but I didn't care.

"Wow." the person said. "I didn't know you could play guitar."
I turned around to see Nick.
"Um, yeah. I can play." I stopped playing at that moment. "Um, you probably want your guitar back..." I handed to him.
"What song was that? I've never heard it before."
"It doesn't have a name. I wrote it when I was eleven. I didn't add words because I thought they would be better when I was older."
"Well, it's very good. I can't believe you wrote that when you were eleven!"
"Yeah, well, you could say I was very... creative then."
"And you're not creative now?"
"Well, I don't know. I haven't written a song since I was thirteen."
"How many songs did you write?!"
"Um... I remember... at least 3... most likely more than that."
"All by yourself?"
I nodded.
"Wow."
"Yeah. I had a lot of time on my hands then."
There was silence for about a minute. Then Nick broke the silence.
"So how did you get here? I came here at 6:10 and left at 7:00. It's 7:28 now. When I left I passed your cabin and peeked through the crack in your door and you weren't there...."
"Oh, I got up at 7:50 and came down here to think. But I saw you were down here playing a song, so I... um... well..."
"What?"
"I went into the forest and... looked at.. leaves." I lied.
"You didn't hear my song that much, did you?"
"What? Oh.. no! No, only a bit of the beginning tune." I lied again.
Dangit, stop lying, Keila!
"Oh okay." he let out a small breath. Apparently he didn't want me to hear the song... oops.
"Well, Keila, is now a good time to tell me what you needed to tell me?"
Crap. I forgot all about that!
"Um..." I swallowed. "Sure. But... promise you won't take it the wrong way?"
"Promise."
"Pinky swear?" I stuck out my pinky.
"Pinky swear!" He laughed and grabbed my pinky with his.
"Okay. So..." I was thinking of a good way to put it. "You know how you um, kissed me... the other night?"
He nodded.
"Well... how do I put this?"
"Did you not like it?"
"No! No. It's.. it's not like that, it's just... I.." I thought some more. "I didn't... feel anything.. sp-special. You know?"
"Oh. I see. And..?"
"And.. what I'm trying to say is.. I don't.. like you.. like that."
"You don't?" He looked a bit hurt.
"Not.. not really.. at the moment anyway. There's still a chance."
He nodded slightly and looked down at the sparkling lake.
"Okay. ...I understand." He swallowed hard.
"Oh and the night after that I had a dream about you..."
"You did?" He looked at me, his face unchanged.
"Yeah, um... see, weweregettingmarriedandastheguysaidkissthebrideyouturnedintodraculaandbitmyneck." I said it fast and sorta quiet. Nick burst out laughing.
"Thanks a lot!" I said playfully as I laughed along with him. I stopped and smiled at him. He stopped laughing and looked at me smiling. He started to slowly lean in when...
DONG! DONG! DONG!
"Saved by the bell." I muttered.
"What?"
"Nothing!" I faked a grin.
We sat there and talked.
"So, do you need help with your song?"
"What?"
"Your song. The one with no words. Do you need help writing the words?"
"Oh. I um... promised myself I would write it by myself." This was technically a lie. But I wanted to write it by myself. I thought I could make it about Nick or something. But how could the creativity come back to me before camp ended?

Chapter 15

Nick jumped down next to me with wide eyes.
"Oh my gosh, Keila, are you okay?!"
I didn't answer, just laid there bawling my eyes out.
"I think I broke my leg." I tried to say in between sobbs.
"Okay, let's go..." He led me to the nurse and she called an ambulance. Nick came with me to the hospital. Within a few hours, I was back at Camp Fuego with a cast on my leg and a crutch under my arm. Sarah and Gabi came running up to me.

"Keila! What happened?!" Gabi yelled.
"I, um... fell." I said quietly. I don't know why.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine."
"How long do you have to wear that thing?"
"A few months." They hugged me and went to their fire building class. Nick took me to my cabin.

"Maybe I should leave..." I said.
"What? Why?"
"Well, I don't see how I could do anything here with this thing on my leg..."
Nick didn't say anything. He just stared at the floor. I knew he was keeping something from me.
"Do you want me to stay?"
"Well, yeah."
"And... can you tell me why you want me to stay?"
"Well, because. Like I said before... I want to know you better. And such."
"Well, okay, I guess. But... um... I..."
"What?"
"I don't know how exactly to tell you this..."
"What is it?"
"It's just that... um..."
"You can tell me."
"I, um... I kinda..."
"Yes..?"
"I think I kinda... sorta... maybe..."
"What is it?!"
I didn't say anything for about 30 seconds.
"Keila, you can tell me anything."
"I... I... I..." I started to sweat nervously. I didn't have the guts to tell him what I needed to say. I didn't know how he would take it.
"Keila, tell me!"
"I...I-I...I CAN'T DO THIS!!" I fell back on my pillow.
"Um... I'm a bit confused."
"Me too.." I muttered.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"So... you can't do what?"
"I... I can't tell you what I have to say... not now. Not here."
"Um.. okay."
I closed my eyes. How and when am I going to tell him? How will he react? I shouldn't tell him... but if I don't, I won't feel right around him. And if I do, he'll be crushed. I took in a big sigh. I opened my eyes and saw Nick looking confusedly at the wall in front of him.
"Well..." Nick broke the silence. "I guess I better go. Do you need anything before I leave?"
".......Only a hug." I sat up and let Nick wrap his arms around me. He felt warm and safe, and yet, something didn't feel right. I wasn't sure what, though. He let go and kissed my forehead, then left. I closed my eyes again and slowly laid back down, pulling the blanket over me. Oh wait, I forgot something... I reached over and switched off the light. I sighed quietly and tried to sleep.

Chapter 14

DONG DONG DONG!
"Now can we get down?" I asked Nick, still sitting on the enormous rock sculpture.
"No."
"Why not?!"
"Because if we get down, we won't be able to hear."
"What?!" Suddenly came the voice of the lady with the megaphone. Nick gave me the, 'I told you so' look. I crossed my arms. The lady said something about a kitchen fire.
"What?!"
"Shhh!" She said that a pie suddenly burst into flames. Great. No pie. She also said that until they restock everything, we have to eat hot dogs and roast them ourselves over a fire. A random instructor dude will show us and blahhhh the rest.
"That sucks. No pie." I said. Nick smiled, amusedly, looking down at his feet.
"We can go down now, I guess." he said.
"Finally! Sheesh, dood!" I said as I started to climb down. I was a few feet down and Nick still didn't come down.
"Hey, you there! You comin'?" I yelled.
"What? Oh.. yeah, I'm coming." He started coming down. I was a almost half way down, when my leg slipped on a rock.
"Ouch!"
"What happened?!"
"My leg slipped. I scraped my knee on something."
"You okay?"
"Yeah, I think so. I think it's bleeding." I came down to the part of the rock that stuck out. I looked up at Nick who was about to step down on the ledge with me. He got down, turned around and smiled at me.
"Hi." He said. I started backing up and fell off. I screamed as I slipped, and grabbed the ledge thing, hanging.
"Help!!" Nick grabbed my wrists, but his hands slipped to my hands.
"Your hands are seriously sweaty, Nick!" I started slipping. Darn his uber sweaty hands! I slipped all the way and fell to the rocky ground, landing in a weird position on my left leg. I heard a loud snap. Was it a twig, or was it my leg??

Chapter 13

Nick grabbed my arm and pulled me to some weird place.
"Why's it so freakin' dark?!" I yelled.
"Because your eye are closed!" He laughed.
"What?! Oh... heh." I opened my eyes. "What is THAT?!"
"Do you like it?" He bit his lip.
"Umm...."
"If you don't like it, just say so."
"I don't know... It's... huge!"
I stood there staring at the enormous object.
"How did it get here?!"
"I built it."
"What?!"
"No... I lied. I don't know, I just... found it here."
"It's amazing!"
"Is that good or bad?"
"I don't even know yet."
Nick walked over to it and started climbing.
"What are you doing?!"
"What does it look like I'm doing?! I'm climbing!"
"But why?!"
"Because!" He hadn't gotten very far. He reached out his hand.
"C'mon!"
"What?! I'm not going to climb that thing!"
"But I need to show you something!"
"Can't you bring it down here?"
"No." He laughed. I sighed and grabbed his hand as he lifted me to where he stopped. We started climbing. I would guess it's about 12 feet tall (You know, the trees around us were all freakishly short). We finally got to the top of the object. Nick got up there first, and sat. I got up after him and sat next to him.
"Woah.." You could see the entire camp! From there, you could see what everyone was doing. You could be, like, the ultimate spy, because all you would need is binoculars and those things you use to hear people far away.
"Now do you like it?" Nick asked. He looked at me, smiling. I nodded, with a small smile.
"Thank you."
"For...?"
"For showing me this."
"You're welcome." He put his arm around my shoulder and looked at me. I smiled as I took it off. He looked at me again, and I looked at him. He started to lean in, but I turned my head, and quickly said, "So how come we can't see this from the camp?" He shrugged.
DONG DONG DONG!
"We should get down.." I said, starting to move away.
"No, we don't have to."
"What? We should go and hear what the loud lady says! Plus, it'll take a while to get over there."
"Yeah, but we don't don't need to."
I looked at him very confused.
"Okay, whatever you say, weirdo." I went back to where I was before. Nick scooted closer to me. We were about an inch away from each other, he was so close to me. He took my hand and held it. He looked at me and smiled. The feeling came back, and I realized, maybe it wasn't a pukey feeling. Maybe it was a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Chapter 12

"We should get back..." I said. Nick nodded and took my hand. He looked at his watch.
"20 minutes till Breakfast."
"Then we better hurry so we can change out of these clothes!" I realized we were wearing the same clothes as yesterday. He nodded and we left. Nick kept going faster, and faster. Holy crap, the boy's fast! We eventually got back to the cabins. Apparently, his cabin was next to mine. We changed before the bell rang again. We got to the bell place where the lady yelled for us to go to Breakfast. French Toooooaaaast! =D I sat next to Sarah and Gabi.

"What happened last night?" Gabi asked. "You ran away, and Nick ran after you and you didn't come back!"
"I know."
"So what happened?"
"Oh, not much..." I smiled.
"Woah!" Sarah said. "Are you.. smiling?!"
"Oh.. um.. yeah, I guess I am."
"You never smile!"
"Well... I do now."
"Seriously, what happened?!"
"Let's just say, I was tickled."
They looked at me with freakin' weird faces. It made me laugh. We went back to eating. I could barely concentrate on the taste. I could eat, but if you're not thinking of the food that you're eating while you're eating it, you forget you're even eating. Which.. is pretty darn weird. Gabi looked at me weirdly again.
"What?"
"You um.. you look really weird when you eat like that."
"Eat like what?"
"Lemme show you..." She started stuffing her mouth with bite after bite, not chewing until she realized her mouth was full. Then chewed... which, really it looks weird when you chew with an entire mouth full.
"I was doing that?!"
"Yeah."
"Crap!"
"What's going on?"
"Nothing, I'm just.. thinking."
"Okay well, pay attention!" She smiled.

After Breakfast, I went on a hike with the other people who chose to hike. I was near the front. As I was walking, I felt something grab me and pull me away from the path and cover my mouth. You can probably tell I was surprised, if not a little scared. The person held me there until the group was gone. Then let me go.
"Nick?!"
Yup. It was Nick who did that.
"What the heck is all I can say!" I said.
"We need to talk!"
"Now?"
"Now!"
I was confused!

Chapter 11

In case you're wondering, we can hold our breath for a freakishly long time. Seriously. Anyway, Nick swam closer and closer. I wondered what the freak was doing? He had a weird look on his face. Yes, weirder than the one before he tickled me. He got closer, inches away from my face. He started kissing me. That's right, he was kissing me underwater. He put his arms around my waist, holding me tighter. Isn't this a bit dangerous?! You know, what if I need to breath or something, and he won't let go of me?! Oh well. I trusted him to be cautious. We started floating to the surface, still kissing. We finally let go once we reached the surface. I swam to the edge and climbed out. I had a weird sorta surprised, sorta confused, sorta freaked out, sorta happy look on my face. Nick got out, too, and walked towards me, with a bit of the same look.

I sat down, and Nick sat next to me. We were silent for a while. I laid back to watch the clouds. Nick copied me and laid back, too. I started humming a tune. Nick looked at me.
"What are you humming?"
"A song."
"Does the song have a name?"
"Yes."
"Well..?"
"Well, what?"
"What's the songs name?!"
I laughed. "Hoist the Colors."
"Never heard of it."
"You have now." We smiled. "Haven't you ever seen Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Nick?!"
"That's where it's from?!"
I nodded.
"Well I didn't realize that. I like it."
"How can you not realize it?! It's the song that the boy who gets hanged sings. Elizabeth sorta sings it, too, in Singapore."
"Really? Hmm. Well, I haven't seen it in a while."

Silence.

Nick turned his head and looked at me. He smiled. I looked at him. I smiled. He rolled onto his side, and so did I. He started to do something when...
DONG DONG DONG!
It startled us. We hadn't heard the bell since yesterday. We both rolled back in surprise, then quietly laughed. We sat up. The sun had dried the fronts of our bodies, but not the backs. Ugh. How weird it felt! Especially my soggy butt! I looked at Nick again, and somehow I didn't mind the wetness.
